Both ambient and structural, Adult Themes for Beginners is a survey of the materials and forms used in some of my recent work. I see it as a sort of break-up letter or aeulogy to the ideas. I think of it as a funny but serious, self-referential and sarcastic set of tunes packaged as a pseudo-concept album loosely based on the stages of life theorized by German psychologist Paul Baltes. Hopefull the music is potentially more than just a top line, bass line, and emotional inflection for the listener and for some, I seem to have hit the nail square on. My Indie and Pop friends think the album is “kind of a mess” (actual quote haha) and myExperimental and Contemporary music friends think its too ‘Pop.’ So there you have it. A completely misunderstood album.
