Among designers, Martin Venezky is somewhat of a venerated elder. The San Francisco designer, renowned for his many books on Wes Anderson, as well as environmental designs for Facebook and Adobe, walks us through his eclectic and ‘anti-digital’ process as well as his approach to life and art making in this short documentary.
Directed by Mike Slane of Practice Studios, I was tapped to write music that created a modern nostalgia resemblant of Venezky’s home and workspace which act as sort of a meeting place of forgotten tchotchkes and they’re misremembered importance as a cultural artifacts. I scoured old piano songbooks, wax cylinder recordings for inspiration and eventually landed on a sort of mashup/collage of songs played on a felt/weathered spinet piano.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Martin Venezky is not your typical point-and-click designer. While he is adept at operating a mouse, he is just as comfortable cutting and pasting type from old books or collaging found signs or making his own photographs. The results are unique creations of a unique eye.
