First, I grew up with All in the Family, Good Times, Diff’rent Strokes, The Facts of Life and The Jeffersons so I was beyond excited to get a call from titles designer Jean-Paul Leonard about creating the musical element for the open to a show that recreates classic episodes from each of these iconic sitcoms.
We immediately thought of all the great live TV show themes and opens and took a sort of ‘best of’ inventory for this contemporary throw-back. Wah guitar, bongos, Chicago Funk style brass, and classic Hollywood strings make up the sound palette for the original but produced in a more contemporary style.
For each episode, we riffed on the content and framing of the show. For instance, some XMAS flavor sprinkled like sugar plum fairy dust for EP 2 and straight 80’s electro breakin’ for EP 3.
Seems like it got the juices flowing for the 25+ million viewers as much as it did ours.
