This film gutted me. TJ watches his dad slowly change and deteriorate because of Alzheimer’s. Every time I watch the film, I cry by the end of the third act.
People who become senile or who suffer from dementia can only ever live in the present. There’s only the now and in some ways you can’t trust the past. Because of the nature of the story, I wanted the score to come more intuitively. I wanted to react to what I was seeing without constructing a conceptual apparatus on which the score could hang.
Also, I got to play a lot of piano on this which makes me happy.
