First, I love creating music for horror movies. This was a special treat as I was able to do the sound design and the mix as well.
After watching the first rough cut, I was immediately struck by the closeness of the lead actor’s trembling voice and staggered breathing. I transposed a sample of her crying and breathing for viola which became the main motif in the intro and during the panicked build.
The monster is always slightly out of view, veiled by darkness and somewhat out of focus. Their theme became a sustained legato counterpoint of to violins weaving between 1/4 tone sharp and flat expressing a tonal center but never sustaining a unison.
