XOXO

Directed by
Christopher Louie

Synopsis

XOXO is an ensemble comedy about a group of 20-somethings on a crazy adventure to the biggest EDM festival in America, XOXO. The film follows six strangers whose lives collide in one frenetic, dream-chasing, hopelessly romantic night. At the center is Ethan, a young DJ who gets a last minute slot to perform after his tracks go viral online days before the festival. This is a huge opportunity… if he can just make it there in one piece.

XOXO

The thing about a movie about EDM culture and festivals is that you can’t rely on dance music to feed every emotion. That’s the score’s job. It was a fun challenge to write a score that could dovetail harmonically and stylistically between musical numbers as well as land the emotional punches when necessary.

XOXO is almost wall to wall music and so my strategy was to create a seamless mixtape or a sort of meta-musical. An instrumental opera with necessary/interesting recitative.

I used production and mixing techniques to keep the style in the EDM genre (synth strings from a Yamaha cs-80 with New York compression for instance) but coupled with a more traditional compositional approach you’d expect from a film score.
